Titanium Colour Spectrum

Titanium and niobium are members of the reactive metals family, which have the unique property of taking on colour when exposed to electricity or direct heat such as a torch flame. When electricity is used to create colors on niobium and titanium, the process is called anodising. During anodising, the metal is immersed into an electrolytic bath through which an electric current is passed, causing an oxide layer to form on the surface of the metal. Light striking the surface of the oxide layer and the metal below, will result in two refracted light rays which reinforce each other and produce different colours depending on the thickness of the oxide layer. This phenomenon, called optical interference, is responsible for holographic images and the iridescent colours in butterfly wings, beetles, soap bubbles and oil slicks. The colours are called interference colours, and were first described by Issac Newton in the 1670s. The colours are naturally occuring and are not derived by chemical dyes and as a result are limited to the range of colours as shown below.

Please note that computer monitors and screens are calibrated differently and colours can appear slightly different. Whilst we try and anodise the colour to your exact specifications, colours may appear slightly different in reality.

How do I know what size ring or Bangle do I need?

Sizing can sometimes be a little tricky, especially if buying for someone else.

In order to get an accurate size would recommend visiting your local jeweller for a professional ring fitting.

Bangles are a bit easier than rings to size. If you have another bangle measure the Inside Diameter in millimetres across the largest width.

Can you send my purchase as a gift directly to that person?

Every item bought online is gift boxed. Gift wrapping can be added by request, which can also include a personalised gift message to the recipient. Make sure you add your message in the comments/notes section upon check out. Gifts can be sent directly to the recipient, please let us know the details in the comments/notes section upon checkout.

How do I clean and care for my jewellery?

Vanessa R Williams Jewellery is made using a careful combination of different metals to create unique, beautiful and sometimes delicate wearable pieces. Although the material of choice is titanium, a mixture of sterling silver and stainless steel are also used. Like with all jewellery, care should always be taken to preserve the colour, shape and lustre of any piece. Certain Metals and materials may require a little cleaning or extra care to maintain it. Please look over the product care list for further information. If you have any questions please contact us

Should I use chemical dips to remove tarnish?

No. Although these dips remove tarnish at an accelerated rate, they are too strong and you may end up removing an important layer of the silver’s surface. When this happens, your silver will tarnish more quickly in the future.
